How to Organize the Perfect Closet 101

April 22, 2019
Closet organizer in Bloomington apartment

You have found the best apartment. Natural light is flooding in through the windows, the kitchen cabinets are roomy, and you can't wait to take a bubble bath in the garden tub. As you start unpacking your stuff into the closet, it becomes obvious you may have too many clothes. And shoes. Maybe your roommate won the roomier closet, your significant other actually has more to hang up, or the space is more restricted than you thought. Here are a few ideas to make the most out of your closet.

Hangers Trump Folded Piles!

Hangers are typically regarded as a necessary evil. Acquiring hangers is an errand and not considered fun. However, the types of hangers you decide to use in your closet can create or minimize space. Using velvet hangers will increse so much availability in your closet and they're affordable. Also, keep your hangers the same color. It's all too easy to become distracted by clashing hangers.

Organize with a Plan!

After you've made the switch to your hanger of choice, organize your pieces by color and sleeve length. We have all been there - digging through tops to find immaculate sleeveless blue button up. Organizing your closet from light to dark is easy, but have fun with it! You're the one who has to live with it every day.

Having Folded-Clothes isn't the End of the World!

Not every piece needs to have a hanger. Your sweaters, shirts, and jeans can all be folded into drawers or shelves. Folding items will keep the closet volume down. The contrast between hanging and folded garments will ensure you see your clothes more clearly.

If there is Space, Use it!

Take advantage of extra storage for the bottom half of the closet. Store accessories or folded clothing in the cubbies and keep shoes underneath. If there is still capacity, the top [of|part of|area of]184] the organizer you should definitely use. There is no dead space in a closet - only unused potential.

+1 for the Road...

If space allows in your bedroom, a rolling rack is the perfect addition to any walk-in closet. Create a plan for your outfits either daily or weekly, use your most coveted pieces as adornment, or you can still use the rack as additional storage space.
